Big Brutus is the world's second largest electric shovel. It was used to mine coal in the area in the mid-1900's. It's 16 stories tall and weighs 11 million pounds. It's an incredible and imposing structure. Self-guided tours are available of the old shovel - costs $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids ages 6 to 12. Hours are generally daylight hours, but it depends on the season.
Big Brutus stands in the middle of the southeastern Kansas, in the exact spot where it was last used. Deemed too expensive to keep in use and too expensive to dismantle, it was left abandoned. It has been dedicated to the memory and history of mining in southeast Kansas.
Halfway between Baxter Springs and Pittsburg, KS is NE Scammon Road / County Highway 102. Follow this highway and the signs appx. 14 miles out into West Mineral, KS. At 60th street, you will turn left / south, and a mile down is the park. You will see the tower of the shovel to your left from a mile or so out.
When you pull into the parking lot, go to the far south side. There will be a makeshift gate made out of logs and pallets. The box is in the left pallet. Please recover and re-cover carefully.
