The Ice Box Letterbox
By: Old News, Art Boy, and Flaming Rootie-Tootie
Background: The John Gallo Ice Arena is one of our favorite places to go skating when we are here on the Cape in the summer. They have varying schedules for skating, both public hours, and for local hockey teams and training, as well as for figure skating enthusiasts. The next nearest ice arena on the Cape is just down the Rte 28 in Falmouth!
Location: Rte, 6 in Bourne, MA;
Notes: Bring an ink pad; poison ivy does NOT pose a threat here, as of 7/2010 UNFORTUNATELY THIS LETTERBOX HAS GONE MISSING!!!
Directions to the Box:
By Car: Go to the John Gallo Ice Arena, just off the Bourne Rotary, after the Bourne Bridge, on the Cape Cod side of the canal. From the rotary, drive about ½ mile on Rte 6 East. One could also approach from the Sagamore Bridge and Sandwich – about 2 miles. Turn into the arena entrance closest to the Bourne side. If you want to go skating you can park here! (See internet for public skating schedule.) Otherwise continue to the back of the parking lot, and park in the left corner. You will see a trail heading down to some railroad tracks, and further down toward the canal (a nice walk and view—careful of trains!). From the entrance to the path turn left, *** take 17 paces. On your right you will see two pine trees. Face those trees, walk to the fatter pine, and turn 180 degrees: in front of you will be a big rock. Look down to the right and you will find the Gallo Ice Box letterbox.
By Bike or on Foot: On the bike path heading either direction, find the foot path located where the telephone pole #283 would be if there was one (between pole 280 and 285). Turn up the path, away from the canal. Cross the railroad tracks (watch for trains!) and proceed up the path until it ends. Turn right. Then follow directions listed above***.
