Hiker’s Delight
This is only my second letterbox that I have hidden. The first is in the Branson, Mo. Area, hidden in June, 2010. Lake City, Co. is one of our favorite places. We have been coming here for 28 years. I wanted to make this a very easy letterbox to locate, encouraging searchers to take in the scenery and perhaps do the hiking trail that is close to the letterbox.
Clues:
From Lake City: Head south on Hwy. 149, past Vickers Dude Ranch on the left. Just past mile marker 70, look for the signs to CR30, Lake San Cristobal. Turn right onto CR30 and drive 3.3 miles. Drive slowly and take in all the wonderful scenery, passing Lake San Cristobal, the largest natural lake in Colorado.
At 3.3 miles you will see a sign stating Red Mountain Gulch. Turn in the road heading up to the parking area and park. Walk back down the road to the aspen tree behind the entrance sign. It has a large boulder in front of it. Circle the tree and you will find a pile of rocks. The letterbox is there.
From the south (Creede), past mile marker 68, stop at the Alfred Packer Massacre Site for some local color and information. Drive about one more mile and you will see the sign to turn onto CR30, Lake San Cristobal. Turn left onto CR30 and head out for 3.3 miles. Follow instructions above.
Enjoy every minute of this wonderful place. The scenery is spectacular!!!
God bless you! PawPaw
