“Deer Footprint Letterbox”

Directions:

This is one of 3 animal foot print mini-letterboxes located in Alta. It is accessible ONLY from June to September.

Drive up Little Cottonwood Canyon to the town of Alta.

Go past the information booth in the top parking lot at Alta and drive on

the dirt road all the way to the end where the campground is and park in the

parking lot.

From parking lot, take the trail that heads down to the restrooms on your
right.

On your left you’ll see the Cecret Lake Trail and a sign that says “Cecret Lake 1.0 ←”

You’ll come to an immediate fork. Bear to the right.

You’ll hear a stream on your left and will cross it. You can see campsites through the trees on your left. Walk under the Supreme Chair lift. Look up toward the chair lift and you’’ll see 3 paths. Take the middle one between the trees, up the slight hill to the main trail.

Go right on the main, wider, jeep trail. Cross a creek bed to a sign on the right that says “A Place of Dramatic Beauty”.

Go under a 2nd chair lift. A 2nd sign that says “Geological Forces at Work Around You” is on you left. Devil’s Castle is in front of you.

Cross a wet stream. You’ll pass a very tall rock on your right (approx 10 feet tall) next to the trail. Then you’ll see a much larger rock on your right.

Walk past the larger rock about 33 steps to the next trail on your right. Follow that trail between the big trees and continue on down the hill. You’re walking through a “rock garden” for approx. 5 minutes until you come to the top of a series of switchbacks on the trail.

You’ll see a bulbous, gnarly tree on a rock on your left. Take the right switch back and go approx. 8 steps to an old dead tree on your left. The “Deer Footprint Letter Box” is tucked in behind the large rock at the bottom of the tree and is covered by 2 smaller rocks. You can reach into the hiding place while standing on the trail.

After finding the letter box, you can continue down the trail to the road, or retrace your steps back to the main Cecret Lake jeep trail.
