JCS Letterboxes:
This is the 2nd series of letterboxes done for a Girl Scout Gold Award to promote inexpensive family activities, which help parents and children to enjoy the out of doors, instead of all the indoor electronic activities that take away from family togetherness.
J.C. Solmonese School was built in 1978 and named after Joseph C. Solmonese, who was a beloved math teacher in the town and the High School Principal for many years. When it was built, it was the largest school east of the Mississippi and the building committee had to get special permission to build a school of its size. Today it seems small in size compared to schools built today. It is located at 315 West Main Street (Route 123) in Norton, MA. Please find these letterboxes on days or times that school is not in session. When done stamping in each letterbox, please re-hide carefully.
Box #1: Devils Footprints:
Park anywhere in the parking lot. Start at the flagpole by facing away from the school. To your right there is a wooded island dividing the parking lot. Head up the visible path but beware of poison ivy and broken glass. After just a few steps down the path you find a large rock in the path. This is the devils footprints rock. On the right side of the front of the rock you will see two indents that are believed to be the devils footprints that were left behind in a riveting story:
Major George Leonard was said to have made a deal with the devil, that in order to gain wealth and prosperity the major would give his body to the devil after he died. He became a very wealthy man, and none know just how. The Major died on September 5th 1716. While his body was laid out being prepared for the grave it was said that the devil came into his room and was about to complete the deal when he was surprised in the act and jumped out the window onto a rock that was 30 or 40 rods behind the house. (A rod is 16 ½ feet or 5 ½ yards long.) He came down with such force and heat that he made two footprints in the rock.
To find the box, find a medium sized oak tree behind the rock just a few steps from an apple tree. The Devils Footprints Letterbox is behind the oak tree covered with leaves and sticks.
Box #2: Playground letterbox:
Go back out to the parking lot and follow the paved driveway heading to the back of the school. You will notice the patch of forest that runs along behind the play ground. Make your way to the left of the playground where the woods turn a corner. Right before the corner you will come to a path that leads to a large tree. The tree limb lowest to the ground is pointing back towards the playground; it also points towards two trees that are the same kind as the large one. In-between the two smaller trees, on the ground, there is a root. The Playground letterbox is half under that root. On your way to the next box, feel free to enjoy the playground.

Box 3: Silo Letterbox:
Go back to the parking lot. When you drove in you probably saw the silo that is beside the driveway in from route 123. This is the original preserved silo from the site of Rose Farm on which the school was built. Start facing the sign on the front of the silo, standing on a rock that’s submerged in the ground with only the top showing. Face your right and take 11 paces (that’s each time one foot hits the ground) towards a telephone pole a little ways off. Turn to your right facing the woods. Walk straight onto a path leading in - it may be covered by a branch; just push that to the side as you enter. Once inside look to your left and find an eight trunked ash tree. The Silo letterbox is hidden in the very middle of all of the trunks.
