I've been told the box needs a new container. If you replace it please let me know so I can compensate you in some way. I'll go and replace it myself as soon as I can, but it will probably be a while.

Pioneers coming from the east could head south from The Dalles on the Barlow Road, turning west up into the mountains at Tygh Valley. That route up over the mountains along the Barlow Road was probably the most treacherous part of their journey – the last leg so to speak. Personally I’d have stayed in Tygh Valley – a sweet little community nestled in a lovely valley along the White River – looks like many folks did just that. I left this letterbox on my way through there to Rock Creek Reservoir campground for a weekend of rubber boating with my friend.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS and CLUE: From Maupin heading towards The Dalles on highway 197, turn left on Tygh Valley Road near the bottom on a long downhill segment of the highway. It’s about 10 miles between Maupin and Tygh Valley. When you get to the junction just outside of town, take the left-most of your three choices, Wamic Market Road. As you climb the hill with the valley on your right, watch for a heritage marker and park there. Facing the sign, stand at the end of the bench on your left, walk 12 steps at 250 degrees and check under one of the bushes. A friend put camo tape on the lid for me and hid it well, said it was not hidden very well when she found it. So please do the same yourself and hide this as best you can when you're finished.

It's not difficult to imagine yourself in a covered wagon looking at Mt. Hood and knowing that’s where you are headed. The valley below must have looked mighty inviting. But if you’re the intrepid traveler bent on getting to the Willamette Valley to make your home, then westward ho!
