Galiano Island in BC is full of little beaches dotted all over the edges of the island. One of our favorites is Pebble Beach on the northeast shore, looking out onto the Georgia Strait. At low tide, it's perfect for exploring for crabs, seastars, and all kinds of shelled creatures in the crevaces and tidepools in the rocks. Be sure to bring water shoes because the broken shells and barnacles can make walking through the water and along the rocks painful if you're in bare feet!
To get there, go to the end of McCoskrie Rd. and take the trail down to Cable Bay at the Pebble Beach Reserve (a 15-20 minute walk). As you approach the beach, the path leaves the forest, goes through a small clearing, and then follows a driftwood-lined path to the beach. There is a large bush on the right next to the driftwood pieces lining the path, and on the right side of that large bush, is a large circular piece of driftwood tucked inside the greenery, with a tree growing out from its centre. Pull out the various pieces of driftwood filling the centre of the big circular driftwood base to find the letterbox inside. Be careful of the thorn tree next to you on your right! And be sure to be discreet and careful when you put it back so noone can see it.
