We have been letterboxing for years but this is the first letterbox we have placed. Ospreys are frequent visitors to this area. Enjoy.

Parking is located at the trailhead on Route 156 in East Lyme a short distance from the intersection of Four Mile River Road and Route 156. The trailhead and parking is very close to the Old Lyme border and town sign. You will see a white wooden gate with a no parking sign, so you can park on the grass along 156 (not in front of the gate).

The hike to the letterbox is 3/4 of a mile and overlooks the marsh, Four Mile River and Marina. The trail leads to connecting trails that are part of Rocky Neck State Park.

As you begin your hike on the blue blaze trail (somewhat difficult to see the blazes), notice the stone wall to the left as you approach a small meadow. The trail re-enters the woods with slight visibility of the Marina to your right. You will also begin to see Four Mile River.

Within a short distance you will approach a bench. Just past this, the red blaze trail meets up with the blue blaze trail at the first trail post. Continue on the blue blaze trail past the second post which says "Pavilion."

Pass the third post and at the fourth trail post, you will hike up a small hill and continue straight off the main trail to the rocky ledge ahead of you. Enjoy the view and look for ospreys.

Walk along the rocky ledge a short distance. To your left, opposite the marsh, you will see a 3 sister tree. While looking at the tree, look to "2 o'clock" where you will see a small fallen tree. The letterbox is hidden under bark within the log. Please take the time to re-conceal the letterbox as this is a heavily traveled area.
