Loon Magic Letterbox

**** Note: On 12/31/04 this box was reported in great shape by some cross-country skiing letterboxers from Illinois. Thank you to the kind soul who answered my plea for a new tupperware container and a Happy New Year of letterboxing to all! *********

This is one of the prettiest walks we've seen in NH and my most favorite Waterwizards letterbox. We only come up this way once a year, so if you find the box, please let us know it's status.

Directions:
From Rt 25 in Moultonborough, turn right onto Blake Road at the Moultonborough Central School. Follow Blake Road for 1 mile until it ends (it turns into a dirt road) and then turn right onto Lee's Mills Road. The Loon Center is on the left. You can watch an educational video on loons inside the center and browse the gift shop.

There are two trails that start to the rear left of the parking area. Bring a compass. Trail maps are available in the mailbox. The Forest Trail is very short (.2 miles) and the Loon Nest Trail is considerably longer (1.7 miles). Take the Loon Nest Trail to find the letterbox. It is any easy hike through the woods and along the northern shores of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Follow the yellow trail markers until you come to the Loon Nest Lookout bench (it has a sign above it). The bench overlooks the bay where a pair of loons nest in June on a nesting raft floated by the Loon Preservation Committee. Walk straight back behind the bench about 30 steps and look for a huge, round, flat, moss-covered boulder. Stand on top of the boulder and sight 165 degrees. Walk about 25 steps in that direction and look for a rock with two trees growing out of it. The letterbox is hidden near the base of the large birch tree behind it.
