The Gnomes are possibly the most compassionate and conservative of the humanoid supernatural creatures. They are neither wholly social nor solitary, but instead tend to live in small scattered family groups. The males are the most commonly encountered, either taking a relaxing stroll or attending to the odd bit of work. It is sometimes claimed that their wives pride themselves on keeping a good home and that is possibly why they are seen less frequently. Gnomes are believed to be extremely long-lived; conversely, though they look ancient from a very young age, they remain relatively sprightly throughout their lives.

Gnomes speak all of the woodland languages and they concern themselves with caring for injured or distressed birds and animals. Gnomes do not readily communicate with humans as often as they once might have, for they are deeply concerned about mankind’s general swing towards disregard and exploitation of nature. If they are encountered by people who show respect for the environment, then the Gnome is more inclined to offer a polite ‘hello’. If you meet the Gnome’s criteria for human contact you are cordially invited to pay him a visit.

To find the Gnome, make your way to Winsor Woods in Canton, CT. Take route 179 north to route 309 (West Simsbury Road). The trailhead is about 200 yards up route 309. Look for the gold and green land trust signs on the left. There is enough room for a couple of small cars here. Otherwise, parking is available down behind the North Canton fire station on route 179. You can print a trail map here. http://cantonlandtrust.org/trailsupport/WinsorTrailMap.jpg You will need a map if you want to explore around the preserve.

Hiking access is provided via a path at the edge of Winsor’s pasture. Follow the path to a stone wall where you will find white trail markers. The perimeter trail is a 1 mile loop, but there are several other shorter trails in between. Take the white trail to the right. Follow white to the intersection of red on the right. Stay on the red trail until it starts to head downhill. If you look to the left here, you will see an entrance for the orange trail. Follow orange for a short ways to the "sitting rock". Take 15 steps to another flat rock. Under the back right hand corner of this rock you will find the gnome. If you would like to hike the 1 mile loop, turn around and head back to the red trail. Turn left on red and continue to the intersection with white. Turn right on white to finish the loop. For a shorter hike, just retrace your steps from the clues or explore the other interior trails. Happy hiking.
