Books Are Fun

This letterbox is located at the Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St. , Newton, MA. Please check the website http://www.newtonfreelibrary.net/ for the current hours of operation. This is our first letterbox plant so the carving is a bit rough.

Enter the library and head to the children’s room. Try to figure out the call number of the section that the letterbox is hidden near from the following clues. The call number is a series of letters and numbers that all the material in the library have so that they can be found. The format of the call number you are looking for will look something like: J XXXX. Books in children's room are all preceded by "J".

1.For the first letter in the call number:
Go to the hardcover juvenile fiction section. Look up towards the ceiling. Above one of the shelves is a parrot. Walk to the parrot. Face the shelves that the parrot is directly over so that the windows are to your right and the exit to your left. Look at the books on the shelf that the parrot’s tail points to. What is the first letter of the author’s last name for all the books on this shelf? This letter is the first letter in the call number after "J".

2. For the second letter in the call number:
Go into the picture book room. There are four rectangular-shaped alphabet shelves. Find the two alphabet shelves that are next to each other and have “SMALL BOOKS” signs on top. Stand in between them facing the windows that look outside. Look at the shelf in front of you. There are eight letters on the end of that shelf. Put them in alphabetical order. In alphabetical order, what is the fourth letter? That is the second letter of the call number after "J".

3. Now think of the word “library”. What is the second letter? The second letter is the third letter in the call number.

4. For the fourth and last letter of the call number:
Look out of the semi-circular window in the picture book room. Look for a statue of a boy with an animal. Walk out of the picture book room to that statue. As you stand facing the windows with the statue to your right, look at the letters labelling the shelf to your left. What is the eighth letter? This is the last letter of the call number.

As mentioned above, all the books in the children’s room start with the letter “J.” Add the four letters you just figured out from the clues above to form the call number that the letterbox is hidden near. It should look something like this: J XXXX

Find the area where the material with this call number is shelved. Facing this section, turn 180 degrees to see the moveable shelves. Figure out the titles of the material from the following clues then raise the moveable shelf that contains the material with the underlined names.

1. Homer’s __________ : a long journey or trip.
2. ______ _______ : part two of a vampire saga by Stephenie Meyer. It is also a lunar phase.

Once you raise this shelf, reach in underneath, at the back of the shelf to find “Books are fun.” It is attached to the back/bottom of this shelf with a magnet. Please replace carefully. Bring your own ink.
