International Friendship Gardens - a treasure to behold!
2055 E Hwy. 12, Michigan City, IN (219)878-9885
www.friendshipgardens.org

Located East of the city of Michigan City on the South side of US-12.
Open Wed.-Sun. 10am-4pm May-October Pets on leash welcome.
Admission fee: $4.00/person; $10.00/family; children 12 & under free. Special events are held throughout the summer with additional admittance fees. A lot of the work is done by volunteers and we thought it was well worth the admission fee. You can print a trail map from the website or they will give you one at the Welcome Cabin. Insect repellant, water, and good walking shoes are recommended! Restrooms at Welcome Cabin, outhouses along the trails. Main trails are ground asphalt, easy walking.

"These are historic gardens inspired by the 1933 Century of Progress Fair in Chicago on land traced with trails used for centuries by Native Americans."

Their Mission Statement: "To create a botannical environment that promotes world friendship through ethnic gardens and enhances the lives of visitors by artistic, musical, and nature related educational programs."

There are two main garden areas to see. Heritage Gardens, with the path of nations. There are separate gardens featuring different nations around the globe. I particularly liked the Norweigan garden, "Scandiana"...my companion enjoyed the Native American display.

You'll want to head towards Celebration Gardens to find the letterbox. From the Welcome Cabin walk down the friendship path, past the Symphony Gardens & Wedding Area, veering right somewhat to cross the bridge. At the sign pointing out 'Features' turn left instead. Up hill a bit to the big stump on the left, just before a workmen's shed. Over the hill there are picnic tables under the pavillion for stamping convenience.

It wasn't very busy on the day we visited but imagine some days it is more so, and it IS a highly maintained park, so PLEASE! Be Discreet and rehide well.

Hope you enjoy the trails & gardens!
