Welcome to the Silver Lake Historical Series.

This is a series of three boxes placed in Breakheart Reservation Saugus Ma.
This is about Saugus history, including Saugus Iron Works. This is not at the Saugus Iron Works.

You can access Breakheart via Forest St. just past the Target store off Rt 1. This is a wonderful area all year round for walking the car free road, hiking the trails, or taking a dip in Pierce lake. A retreat in the summer, gloriously beautiful in the fall, and plowed in the winter. What ever your activity is you will enjoy this area.
Please print the trail map from the link. This is not necessary for this box series, but it is great to have.

Clues:
While facing the visitors center in the Saugus Breakheart parking lot, enter
using the paved road on your left. Follow this main road, look for the third
paved left off the main road.
Here you will see a bench and a faded Silver Lake sign. Enter here looking for the blue trail markers. Follow this trail counter clockwise around the lake. The lake will be on your left. Stay on this trail until it opens into a substantial clearing and the island is perpendicular to your left shoulder. (About 180 paces from the start of the trail. -a pace is 1 full step, right foot, left foot =1 pace ) This is where the island is closest to the mainland. Stand on the center of the trail with the "No Swimming" sign at your left shoulder look right. You will see a crevice in a group of rocks about twenty feet away. Here you will find the piece of history
that put Saugus on the National Parks map.

Continue to stay on the blue trail that circles this lake. You will come to a
small wood bridge overlooking the flume. This has a great story on the sign at the base telling of depression era economic stimulation. If you check it out return back to this spot for the next box. Again on the blue trail that circles the lake walk 75 paces from the bridge. Look for the two "No Swimming" signs.
Take trail on your right, immediately bear left at the fork. Walk 10 paces.
There is a double trunk tree on your left with a surprise feature behind it. In the cavity you will find the icon that will help to preserve this beautiful land. "National Parks Service" established in 1916.

Return to the trail. As you come around the horn of the lake you will pass over a small wood bride. Resist the urge to go strait. Turn left at the Silver Lake trail sign. At 50 paces you will come to multiple trails crossing. Take the farthest left to continue on the blue trail. At about 40 paces more you will come to an opening revealing the lake on your left. Turn right to see the large stone wall. Walk up the hill and look for the small sapling growing at eye level. Work the small stone free to find the Saugus Seal. You will find the logbook here also.
Continue on the trail closest to the lake and in a very short distance you will be back at the start of the blue trail.
I hope you enjoyed this series, and learn to love Breakheart as I do. Use
caution when working with the boxes. There can be a lot of people around.
