Are you ready for an adventure around Cabrillo Beach? This series will take you around to the most interesting sites around the beach, and the tide pools. This is a great way to spend the day, have a picnic, or see the aquarium. Boxes 1 and 2 are wheelchair and bike accessible, but 3 and 4 are not. Boxes 3 and 4 should also not be attempted at high tide. For the adventure you will need, appropriate and comfortable shoes, gloves, a compass, and of course, your letterboxing kit! Ready to start?

Clues:
To start the adventure, locate Cabrillo Beach, just off of Pacific Ave. The beach charges a fee to park in their lot, but limited free street parking is available. After parking, locate the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. This aquarium offers a small collection of fish, as well as touch tanks, and aquatic nursery.

BOX #1- CABRILLO MARINE AQUARIUM- Alive and well as of 12/30/2010

Start from the entrance steps of the aquarium. With your back to the aquarium, walk to the right. At the end of the metal wall, walk to the caged pipes. Behind it is the main water valve. You'll notice there are 2 wheels on top. Under the second wheel, against the wall and covered with ivy is the small camo box.
Remember that you are in view of cars and beachgoers, so please be discreet, and make sure no one is watching. Please re-hide well. In case you are wondering, the stamp is the logo of the aquarium.

BOX #2- SALT MARSH- Alive and well as of 12/30/2010

Now you will be heading to the salt marsh. This marsh is a great spot for birdwatching, as it is home to many seabirds, including the Snowy egret, which is what the stamp image is.

Head back the way you came passing the aquarium on the left. Continue to head North along the sidewalk. At Salinas de San Pedro, cross the street, and head down the path, following the animal tracks. Just before the path turns right into the marsh, look east for a flaky, multi-trunked tree, closest to the fence. Step through branches and piles of sticks to reach the back of that tree. At its base under a pile of leaves and a dead palm frond is the camo box.
You are in view of people, so please be sure you are not seen by anyone at the marsh or by anyone on the path.

BOX #3- TIDE POOLS 1- Alive and well as of 12/30/2010-
In a new hiding spot. Be aware that the recent rains caused rock slides and that the base of the hill is now covered by small pebbles.

The time has come for boxing in the tide pools. You should only attempt these boxes at low tide. The Cabrillo tide pools are great for viewing wildlife. Usually you will see Sea Anemones, Sea Stars, and Sea Hares, sometimes the occasional crab. Farther out, the California State Fish, the Garabaldi, which is what the stamp image will be.

Head back toward the aquarium, passing it again. Continue past it, and cross the street by the parking hut. Follow the man's gaze down the wood lined path to the sea. Follow the path over the bridge. At the end of the path, continue on Southwest along the base of the hillside past chunks of failed cement. Pass the remnants of a room, or an "urban cave." Continue on about 200 steps. Look for the flat rock on the ground with a yellow CSU. Take a compass reading of 15 degrees. On the right side of the rock outcropping, at about eye level, is a nook covered with rocks, sand, and pebbles. The box is hidden sideways in this nook.
You may be in view of people at the tide pools, so please be aware of that. After putting the box back, remember to fill the nook up with pebbles and rocks.

BOX #4- TIDE POOLS 2- Alive and well as of 12/30/2010

This box is also in the tide pools. The stamp is of a starfish.

Continue on, passing the drainage pipe. After the pipe, keep going until you reach two rusty old pipes sticking out of the ground. Look up the hill for another rusty pipe in front of a boulder. At the northeastern side of this boulder, there should be a grey, holey rock. It covers a crevice under the boulder. In this crevice lies the fourth camo box.

When you are done please remember to re-hide all boxes EXACTLY where you found them and cover them the ways stated in the clues. Make sure no one sees you. Thanks! Also check out the clues for the "Boy Scouts of America, CA" box, which is close by.

I hope you have enjoyed your adventure in Cabrillo Beach. I have always enjoyed coming here, so I hope you did too. Now you can check out the beach too. Here are the hours for the aquarium if you are interested;
Tuesday- Friday: 12-5, Saturday and Sunday: 10-5, Closed Mondays. Admission is free, but a donation of $5 is suggested.
