Roxbury’s Butterfly Pioris Portdiceis is located in Roxbury’s Lilly Preserve. Lilly Preserve is located on the north side of Good Hill Road 100 or so feet north east of Bacon Road. Parking for a few cars is on the south side opposite the preserve. The entrance from the parking area is across the street back toward Bacon Road. There are two loop trails, red one mile, blue one and one half miles.

To find Pioris Portdice follow the blue blazed trail. Pass thru an opening in a rock wall going left and soon crossing a wooden bridge. At the meeting with the red trail (to the right) blue (to the left) go straight and in the rock wall on the right in the middle of four quartz rocks your butterfly sleeps. Please recover my nest because I do like sleeping in peace.

Hike the red trail rated moderate which contains mixed hardwoods, rock outcroppings and old stone walls. Watch for the old apple orchard, mill pond and sawmill site. Return the way you came, or do the red loop, or follow the blue trail and find an interesting chair and bridge returning on the other side of Jack’s Brook to Good Hill Road.

Let us know of your find and how our box is doing.
