Letterbox Name: BtVS Cemetery Series: From Beneath You, It Devours
Location: Newport Township, IL
Distance: Less than 1 mile

Back in 2007, our very first letterboxing find was the Buffy Box, created by Dragon. And the choice of that box as our first find was no mistake. Since early in the show’s run, Lock and Shock were hooked, and it didn’t take too long for Barrel to join us. So this series was probably every bit as destined as the Slayer herself.

Each entry in the series is actually a pair of boxes – sometimes in the same cemetery, sometimes in two cemeteries relatively near to one another. And to find the names of the cemeteries that you’ll visit, you need to answer a few questions about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The answers to these questions form a code but (good news!) the same code works for all 12 boxes. So once you’ve answered them once, you can use the same code for the subsequent entries in the series.

As for the cemeteries themselves, we tried to find unique places. They are typically the cemeteries that you might spend literally years driving right past without noticing, or without even realizing that they’re there. But they all have a bit of character. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

The fifth pair of boxes belong to Xander and Caleb. The specific clues follow the questions.

1. What is the name of the slayer who was “activated” after Buffy died at the end of Season 1?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
1, 21, 4, 20, 8 , 17

2. Who was the “big bad” that Buffy and her friends had to fight in Season 7?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
10, 24, 21, 22, 25, 8, 9, 10

3. What were the creepy evil beings from the critically acclaimed episode “Hush” called?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
23, 21, 4, 10, 2, 21, 3, 21, 4

4. What writer and director created “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
26, 5, 9, 9, 13, 24, 21, 20, 5, 4

5. What does Buffy slay (primarily)?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
12, 17, 3, 6, 25, 8, 21, 9

6. What is the name of Buffy’s sister, who first showed up in Season 5?

7. Who is the actress who played Faith?

21, 2, 25, 16, 17, 20, 11, 9, 24, 1, 11

8. Who was Buffy’s boyfriend in Seasons 4 & 5?

All right, so now for the clues:

Box 1 – Xander

Cemetery: 3-5-11-4-10-8-21-9-10

This cemetery is another one of those that you could (and many do) drive past without ever knowing it exists. But it is home to the only Revolutionary Service Man buried in Lake County, IL, and it is at the grave of Henry Collins where your quest begins. Search on high ground for his marker and, when you reach it, take a compass bearing of 280 degrees. Walk 50 steps, and search in the space between two trunks. Please stamp in, and rehide well.

Box 2 – Caleb

Cemetery: 24-25-19-1-5-8-15-11-4-25-5-4

Leave 3-5-11-4-10-8-21-9-10, and head straight west on Edwards Road. Now I have to tell you that I was very, very close to hiding Buffy at this next spot for no other reason than a great t-shirt that I saw a few months back. It read:

“Then Buffy killed Edward. The End.”

And so placing a Buffy box on Edwards Road just felt right. But trust me, Caleb belongs in the spot where he ended up.

So drive westward, past Crawford road, and you’ll see the cemetery on your right. It’s another old farm cemetery, with some really interesting older stones on the eastern side. But you’re not particularly interested in grave markers this time.

No, this time it’s behind a triangular pile of concrete markers at the back of the cemetery that Caleb lurks. Reach under the fence and behind the neatly-ordered pile of markers. Beneath some stones, you’ll find one downright evil preacher.
