Tanglefoot Will Hitchens rolled off the freightcar next to a bridge in a town called Malvern - not the sort of place he'd usually leave a train but his stomach was telling him it was time to find something to fill it. He looked left, then right, and went straight north instead.

The road was too busy for his taste and he soon found a trail - new and well-paved but limited to walkers and bikers, just his kind of road. He looked around and his eyes narrowed as he spotted a sign - a circle inside a circle, common enough, but it wasn't the kind of sign he was looking for. He'd have to head down the trail.

It was a sunny day but the trail was shaded and cool and Will was no stranger to walking. There were houses on both sides of the trail and he hoped he'd find work to do or a generous soul but he knew he couldn't just knock on the first door he saw. A way down the trail he walked under a bridge - the road to the Swede's Ford if he was any judge. With still no evidence of the sign he sought he had no choice but to go on.

The trail was easy to walk but Will felt ill at ease, farther from the rails than he usually liked to go. Out in the open, now, he saw some ruins on his left and stopped to examine them. A smile split his face when he figured out what it was; seemed like he was on the right track after all. But he preferred to be back in the woods, and soon he was again.

Less than a hundred true paces onward Will looked to his left and saw a small wash - there'd be no sign there, he knew, any rain would wipe it out. But with his stomach grumbling harder his eyes and ears were sharper. Seventy more paces and he stopped, his instincts telling him that this might be the place. To his left, a brick house and a red shed. To his right a three-trunked tree and a suspicious pile of stumps. There in the stumps he found what he was looking for - a sign that told him he'd be able to eat well that night.
