At one time or another, most of the bird species of North America have claimed the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center for a permanent or temporary domain. So it is no wonder that since December 1997, Matagorda has been No. 1 in North America in the Audubon Society's Annual Christmas Bird Count, earning it the nickname "Super Bowl of the Christmas Bird Count". The bird count is done about 16 days each year around Christmas all over the world, and on December 19, 2002, 243 species were counted here, the greatest number ever recorded. The Center spans 34 acres along the Colorado River and contains six gardens of habitat designed to attract local and migrating birds, butterflies and nature tourists. The first box was located here, but this new one is in nearby LeTulle Park, another great place to see birds.

Directions:
Bay City is about 80 miles southwest of Houston via Hwy 59 and south on TX 60. Go west on Hwy 35 for about 2.8 miles to just past the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center and turn left into the first entrance of LeTulle Park. Stay left at first jct then left again at next jct and park by restrooms.

Clues:
Walk south on gravel road to backstop and turn right on grass road. Follow it for about 50 yards to locked LCRA gate. Turn left and follow fence 5 steps to double-trunk tree. Look behind it for tree growing through fence and microbox is hanging on it about 4 feet high. Please replace as described.
