#1 LaPaz School

LaPaz is a small community on U.S. 31 just north of U.S. 6 established in 1873 by Archalaus Hunt. He had been mining silver in Bolivia, but came back to the United States and bought a section of land in North Township that he platted and called LaPaz. A maple tree, known as the witness tree, about 1½ ‘ in diameter, stood on the west line of Michigan St (now U.S. 31) and was the starting point of the town of LaPaz. Hunt named the town after the capital of Bolivia, which means “The Peace”, in Spanish.

The Vandalia R.R., which ran north and south, but is no longer in existence and the Baltimore & Ohio, which is still in operation, ran east and west and had a great part in where the town of LaPaz was laid out.

In 1890 there was a church, school, telegraph office, post office, 2 stores, 2 drugstores, 2 saloons, 3 doctor's offices and stave factory (staves are individual wood strips that form the sides of a barrel.) LaPaz grew rapidly and by 1911 there was a grain elevator, hotel, hardware and implement store, meat market, millinery shop, 2 coal dealers, a blacksmith shop, livery stable, and a shoe shop.

Many small churches and schools began cropping up around the area and people would walk or use a horse and buggy to get there. The 1st school began in 1888/89. LaPaz School was built in 1908 and the 1st 4-year high school graduated in 1911. A second addition was added in 1928, and a final addition in 1954. It became the elementary in 1966 when LaVille became the consolidation Jr High/High School for Lakeville and LaPaz. LaPaz School was demolished in 1985 after the LaVille Elementary School was completed, and in 1994 the “LAPAZ-NORTH TWP.VOL FIRE DEPT” was relocated to the ground where the LaPaz School once sat.

Clue—Park on the North side of the fire station, looking west, walk to the gusher where our neighborhood dogs like to take a hike. From here you will see a brick wall that is a memorial and the only remaining remnants of the LaPaz School. Find your date and take a reading of 360 degrees, walking 30 steps, and at about eye level, (depending on your height) you will find the nesting place you seek.

Access - you must have the number to get in. You will see a lock with 3 rows of numbers on the front and side. The side three numbers must read 784 from top to bottom. Move the right side of the shackle to the left and pull up. After removing the lock, pull the front of the box from the top down and you will find your treasure. Please replace stamp, book and lock. To relock, push shackle in and rotate the numbers to anything but 784. Please double check to make sure the lock is locked securely because our original stamp came up missing when the locked wasn't secure.

#2 Let’s Play Ball
From this spot where you found your cache, walk due east, passing the basketball court on your left (this was once the play ground of the elementary students in the LaPaz School) to the road that circles all around the ball diamonds. You are now looking at our community park. The north diamond is the original ball diamond that the students who attended LaPaz School played softball on. The south diamond, (once the quarter mile track for LaPaz School) was added in the late 1980’s for our Little League teams, and more recently a 3rd diamond has been added for T-ball. Many activities have taken place over the years on these grounds. Old Settler’s Day with a carnival, food, and activities for the entire family was an annual event culminating with the LaPaz Centennial Celebration in 1973. A community building and playground equipment have been added to make this a nice family park.

Clue: Take a seat between the diamonds to rest a bit from your brief plight. View the firs that circle ‘round and may impede the balls in flight. With 5 to your left and 4 to your right, watch out for muggles, your cache is in sight.
