ADOBE RANCH MYSTERY Located in the Big Bend Country of Far West Texas
Between Alpine and Ft. Davis

FROM ALPINE:
At the intersection of US HWY 90W and SH 118N (Ave. E and No. 5th St.) turn right (north) on SH 118 toward Ft. Davis. Proceed approx. 16 ½ miles. When you cross Musquiz Creek you will see several large Cottonwood trees on your right with a pull-out picnic area under them. Park under the northernmost tree.

FROM FT. DAVIS:
From the Jeff Davis County Courthouse drive south on SH 118S towards Alpine. Proceed approx. 7 miles. You will see a grove of several large Cottonwood trees on your left with a pull-out picnic area under them. Pull in and park next to the first picnic table you reach.

THIS WOULD BE THE PERFECT SPOT FOR A PICNIC OR SNACK BREAK.

FACING NORTH, walk towards the small roofed enclosure approximately 220 paces from the picnic area.

(Notice the red rock columnar canyon walls surrounding this grassy area. They are part of the Sleeping Lion formation which makes up most of the canyon both south and north. The same formation is the spectacular backdrop for the old fort and town of Ft. Davis.)

Just before you reach the protected adobe walls, look to the right. There is a section of wall that is free-standing outside the preserve compound. Walk over to it and look carefully at the make-up of the adobe. How many kinds of material can you find? Dried grass? Pebbles? Dried mud? Anything else????? When you have finished studying the 150+ year old wall, look behind it for the letterbox under a pile of rocks.
