Sorry, no dogs are allowed at the Quabbin.

The Quabbin Reservoir was created in 1939 in the evacuated Swift River Valley, in order to provide a supply of water for the city of Boston. The construction of the Quabbin required the building of two dams and the destruction of the towns of Prescott, Dana, Enfield, and Greenwich. By 1946, the reservoir was filled, creating one of the largest bodies of untreated drinking water in the world. The reservation also serves as a wildlife sanctuary and offers numerous hiking trails on the nearly 40,000 acres that are open to the public.

Rattlesnake hill offers one of the best views of the Quabbin Reservoir that I have ever seen. It is well worth the climb. Most of the hike is fairly level on old paved roads except for the last 1/4 mile which is a good uphill climb.

From Rt.2: take exit 16 onto Rt.202 south. Just after the second blinking yellow light at Rt, 122, there is a pull off on the left. This is gate 29. Park your car here.
Walk around the gate and stay straight on the road (ignoring any side roads) until you get to the power lines. Just a short distance past the power lines, you will come to Bullards Corner. This was the site of Herrick's Tavern. Before the Civil War, there was a post office here, and it was a stop for stagecoaches passing between Worcester and Brattleboro or Greenfield.
Take a sharp left onto the dirt road here. Follow this road until you go under the power lines again. Turn right and follow the power lines up the hill. At the top of the hill, the road splits. Bear right and shortly you will see a cairn on the hill on your right. Follow this footpath uphill into the woods. When you get into the woods the trail is easy to follow uphill. When you get to the top of the hill and see the view of the water, sit down to take a breather on the first group of inviting rocks that you see. After you catch your breath, look behind you in the split in the rocks. The “Rattlesnake” is hiding under this rock. Not only is this a great view of the Quabbin, but if you look to the left, there is a great view of Mount Monadnock
After you stamp in, go back the way you came. If you would like to go to the water, go left when you get back to the tar road. The water is about 15 minutes down this road.
You can also bicycle most of the way.

Hike length: 5-8 miles
