TEMPUS FUGIT #4 (Stepney/Birdsey's Plain Cemetery, est. 1794)

THIS IS THE BEST APPROACH: Follow Rt25N past the intersection with Rt 111. After about two miles, you will come to a Duchess restaurant on your right. At the very next traffic light, take a right onto Old Newtown Road. Follow down and to the left, to the stop sign at Purdy Hill. Stay straight on Old Newtown Rd., passing the historic Hawley Homestead on the right and the historic Beers Homestead on the left. You might pass some historic cows in between. When you come to the end, take a left onto Pepper Street. Be looking for the cemetery on your right as you approach the town green.

This letterbox has two stamps, each concealed in different locations in the cemetery. The first stamp is contained in a small black plastic pouch and is the TOP of the tombstone. It is a winged hourglass representing the "tempus fugit" (time flies) image carved into many colonial gravestones. When you have found the Top, STAMP IN. The second stamp which is the TEXT of the tombstone is contained in a box along with a pad. No ink has been provided, so bring your own.

TOP: Enter the front gate of the cemetery and follow the paved path until you come to the "Nathan C. Sherwood" monument on your right. Look past "God is Just" on the Fayerweather monument to the LUZON NICHOLS monument which is capped with a large "Aladdin's lamp." Walk to the lamp, and stand facing the monument. To your left is a round location marker with the carved letter "n". To the left of that marker is a blackened and fallen tombstone. The TOP can be found in the space formed by the toppled pieces of the tombstone. Please hide it well.(PLEASE DON'T STEAL IT!)

TEXT: Continue walking past the Nichols monument, toward the stone wall. Walk past the twin pines until you come to a path. Look right to see another gate leading out of the cemetery. Go through this gate, outside of the cemetery, and around the left pillar to the outside of the stone wall. Count three large trees. The TOMBSTONE TEXT LETTERBOX is hidden under leaves between the third tree and the stone wall.

Stamp in. PLEASE replace the box, carefully.
