The Antler Tree at Needle Rock letterbox is located near the Needle Rock Visitor Center in the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park south of Shelter Cove. The last 3.5 miles of road approaching the visitor center is a steep one lane dirt road, deeply rutted at the end of the rainy season. It is quite drivable but take care.
This stretch of coastline is awesome and very worth the time and effort to visit.
In September of 2010 when my partner and I were the camp hosts here at the visitor center, Roland Wiebe came to visit the park. His family lived in the 1890's farmhouse in the mid 60's when he was 7 years old. It was a standing snag at that time. In the black binder of local history in the visitor center there is a picture of Roland standing beside the enormous eucalyptus snag.
To find the letterbox, face the ocean in front of the visitor center, where you will see the antlers protruding from the grasses. The trail to the bluff travels on the south side of the antler tree. Find the wide, flat portion of the main trunk and look on the north side behind 2 rocks. Please replace carefully.
