The Nashua Riverbox

This is a level, easy trail for all ages. The total time to the box and back is about 30-35 minutes. Please bring your own ink pad.

The J. Harry Rich State Forest in Groton, Massachusetts is named for a forestry professor at UMASS who purchased the land in about 1917 to be used as an educational tree farm. It continues to be a tree farm today. It is located along the Nashua River which winds its way through Pepperell, Groton and other towns in central Massachusetts.

Begin at the Nod Road entrance to the J. Harry Rich State Forest at the intersection of Common St. and Nod Rd. Go around the gate and follow the trail for a few minutes. Look for a small orange marker pretty high up on a tree on the left. There will be a fork to the left. Take the fork onto a smaller trail on the left. Walk a minute or so. With the beautiful Nashua River in view ahead, turn left to follow the orange arrow. Pass under a rainbow-shaped tree with a “see-saw” tree right behind it. Continue along the trail for a few minutes as it winds around a bend to the right.

You will come to a small clearing. Continue along the path toward the river (don’t follow the orange arrow to the left!). Continue downhill toward the river. Just behind a 10 foot tall broken termite infested tree, look for a “claw-shaped” tree reaching out over the river. Stand directly in front of the tree (no need to go down the steep slope all the way). Turn around about 180 degrees and look for the big double pine tree with the roots reaching out to the right. Look beneath the roots of the tree for “The Nashua Riverbox.” Please re-hide the box carefully in the roots of the tree.

Retrace your steps to return to your vehicle (you can follow the yellow arrow signs). Have fun!
