It was a beautiful day for a hike and this trail was the most popular in the park, known for it's many falls. I was here to today to find a small wild flower called the Forest Rose. Unlike most other wild flowers this was a flower that grew under rocks and therefore very hard to find. The best way was to stand very still and listen for the sound of the song sung by the fairy who guarded it. But that was just an old wife's tale I'm sure.
I chose to start at the bottom of the trail and walk up but either way would work. At each falls I stopped and listened. I was growing tired as I approached the falls named for a wagon I slowed and hauled my self up to the top. I paused and listened, a small sweet sound reached my ears.
I walked up a few steps to the moss covered stump on the left of the trail facing upstream. But stopped before the trail leveled out.
I listened again and was sure I heard something. I pulled out my compass and took a few readings so I could find the spot again. At 200 degrees I spotted an unusual boulder. It had 2 small trees growing right out of it. I decided to take a closer look.
There were some flat rocks on the right side of the boulder, tucked under the edge. Dare I pull them out and take a look under them? I had come so far for a glimpse of the Rose, I held my breath and pulled them carefully out....
