Aquidneck Land Trust was founded in 1990 as a non-profit organization by a group of local residents to save the natural character, environmental health, and economic value of Aquidneck Island. As of 2010, 2,000+ acres have been conserved.

The Sakonnet Greenway Trail currently runs from the parking lot on Mitchells lane to the Brown House on Linden Tree Lane at the Glen in Portsmouth, with approximately 5 miles of hiking and equestrian trails.

This series of 4 letterboxes starts from the parking lot off of Mitchells Lane in Middletown. Please be cautious of the golfers as at times you will share the path with the carts. Dogs are allowed, but must be on a leash and in control by their owner at all times.

Letterbox #1 Life is Golf (as of 4.24.11 this one is MIA probably because of the water under the bridge...we will replace soon)
From the parking area off Mitchells lane in Middletown, follow the trail markers for about 5 minutes to a large bridge. Cross the bridge and proceed to the left side of the bridge and under and you will see a pudding stone about 5 steps up. Bend down and look behind the stone and box #1 will be revealed. Be cautious that no one sees you find it because this bridge is shared with golfers.

Letter Box #2 No horsing around
Continue on the trail to the right and walk approximately 10 minutes passing the F.O.P. lodge #21 on your right. Soon you will see a sign that says “Please Stay on Trail”. About 20 yards pass the sign look to your right and you'll see a small path to a NO TRESPASSING sign. If you go to the sign you might be able to see some horses. This is where our #2 box was originally hidden but we placed it where there was a geocache already so to respect the geochachers, we moved it. You can sign the geochache if you like but please be considerate of the geochache and replace it as you found it. To find LB #2 continue on the trail for about 5 minutes making a few curves until you see a trail sign on the left with a large water box directly behind it with pudding stones on top. Continue to the right side of the box to the back and look under some pudding stones to find LB #2. Please watch that the golfers and/or other hikers do not see you and please rehide so it is not visible. Oh and watch out for the prickers.

Letterbox #3 Family Matters (as of 4.24.11 this one is also missing and will be replaced soon)...I guess the lawnmower guy found it???
To find box #3 continue on the trail passing the porty potty on your right, use it if you have to and sit and rest in the gazebo that is a few feet ahead on your right. Find box #3 behind and under the gazebo covered up with a pudding stone. Please put stone back as to not reveal the box by passer bys or the lawn mower.

Letterbox #4 Got Golf? This one was missing but was found nearby and replaced properly.
Finally to get to box #4 continue on the trail passing by a pump house. Continue on a gravel path with a dog kennel on the right and a small pond on your left until you get to a gravel road where you can go right or left. Stop and look to your left to see a large tree behind a stone wall. Look between the tree and wall to reveal the last box.

You can either continue on the trail, which will eventually end at the glen in Portsmouth or you can turn around and return to the parking lot. Good luck and have fun. Please send me an email to let me know if any boxes are missing so they can be replaced ASAP.
