Hwy 69 to Walker Road (near Costco) S. on Walker Rd. for approx. 3 miles to the Northshore (store/cafe/boat rental)entrance. Turn left and take this to the end into the parking lot. This is a fee area-$3.00. Wednesdays are always free!
Go to the 401 trailhead which starts near the entrance of the parking lot. Trail 401 is a paved trail that is easily accessible by pedestrians, strollers & wheelchairs(no bikes). The letterbox is hidden "off trail" a short distance however.
Stroll past the cafe and wander through a hairpin turn. Continue to where two trails meet as one. Continue on trail until you come to trail 402.(Trail sign to right of trail-if you go over the bridge-you have missed 402) Take 402 only a short distance and find the wooden sign. The sign reads:Trail 402 and Lynx Campground Loop G 1/4. Stand facing the sign, look ahead and slightly to the right (about 2:00) Go to that large old gray tree(alligator juniper?) with the hollowed out stump. Be careful reaching into this as you never know what creatures may have made themselves comfortable. The box is well "camoed".
Please be discreet-this is a very popular area. When replacing, please cover and camouflage completely with the rocks and pine needles. The challenge will be in making it look natural and not being watched!
Now continue your hike, throw out a line, unpack your picnic lunch or go back to the cafe and enjoy something yummy. It's a great day to be at the lake!
