Here is another place worthy of exploration in Wisconsin's lovely forest lands. The Halley Creek Birding Trail was created in 1989 by the Nicolet National Forest and the Northeastern Wisconsin chapter of the Audubon Society. Although it is an easy hike and relatively short--only a one-mile loop--one encounters four distinct habitats and each with its associated bird species.
Follow County H east and south out of Laona for approximately 5.5 miles to FR2136 (Goodman Park Road.) Turn left and go east for 5 miles. Look for the Halley Creek Trail sign on the left and gravel access road on the right. At the end of this road is the trailhead and a small parking lot.
The last habitat you will come to on the hike will be a hemlock forest. Look for an uprooted tree leaning over the trail and proceed another 30 steps to a large tree on the left with exposed roots. The letterbox is hidden among them on the bog side.
