BACKGROUND INFO:

This box is dedicated to and honors The Vermont Viking, Erik Davis. If you don't recognize the name, then you need to find out who he was and what an amazing contribution he made to letterboxing. This box was first placed by SandiBox of Texas for the fantastic Live & Breathe gathering. The box's logbook details several of Erik's initial posts to the LBNA talk list where he writes "I will be that fool on the hill . . ."

SandiBox gifted Sue & I this box to "bring Erik home to Vermont." At this past weekend's Bed & Boxing #3, this box was placed permanently in the vicinity of several other historic boxes in Killington, VT above the Inn at Long Trail - the location of that very first gathering held there in McGrath's Irish Pub back in 1999.

CLUES:

From the Inn at Long Trail (a most appropriate "beginning" for this hunt), access the AT behind it. Go up, up, up - ever climbing until you reach the area that levels off. In front of you should be a trail sign as you first climb to the level ground.

Follow the trail (not right) but straight behind the "Maine Junction" sign. Follow the trail until after a short walk, you will see a very large, flat rock in the trail.

Standing on the center of that rock, site a bearing of 56 degrees and in the distance you will spot a large, "knobby" tree. At it's base, inside and to the left, you will find this box - our tribute to the Vermont Viking.

To learn a bit more about Erik Davis and the early days of letterboxing, please read this Washington Post article from July 12, 2002: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A55308-2002Jul11

We also encourage you to read more on the history of letterboxing, found in our Interview Series. There, through the answers to our questions, you will develop an insight as the the thoughts and dreams of some of those very first letterboxers: http://interviewseries.blogspot.com/
