This is the third of our ‘Legends of Jackson County’ series. Long before the first white people set foot in Jackson county, Indians lived and traveled here. One feature that drew both them and the wild game that sustained them was the nearby salt licks and briny water of what came to be known as Salt Lick Creek. Salt was so valuable and necessary for life that the Salt Licks became a sort of neutral zone to the various tribes who came here to evaporate the salt water in shallow pools carved into the stone so they could carry it with them on their journeys. Several of the major Indian trails passed through this area and these were used extensively in the years before white settlement began here. Even prior to these Indians though, were some known as the Mound Builders who lived here hundreds of years ago. We know very little about them but even today some of the earthworks they built are visible.
Not surprisingly, when white settlement began in earnest, conflict ensued. Though these conflicts were often bloody (the Courthouse square now occupies the place where Indians sometimes burned white captives at the stake), at least one early encounter resulted only in embarrassment. A group of Indians came to boil salt and their chief challenged a certain Major John James II to a wrestling match. Major James was broad shouldered and stood about 6 feet 3 inches tall and he threw the chief twice. Major James was known thereafter as the Indian Fighter and when he died he was buried in the large Indian mound in the Jamestown section of Jackson. Several of his family members are interred there with him. Our tribute box is hidden not far from his grave. To find it, you have only to decipher the following:
