Letterboxing is a fun way to explore beech trees at the Arnold Arboretum.
Go to the Visitor Center at 125 Arborway, Jamaica Plain MA 02130.

Follow Meadow Road to the intersection of Beech Path.

Take Beech Path up the hill to the first trash can, then walk forward 39 paces.

Bear off to the right of the path and walk 71 paces to a tall upright tree with a trunk label reading “Pumpkin Ash”.

Turn to your left. In front of you is the tree with the biggest trunk diameter and widest crown spread at the Arboretum. It is a European beech accessioned in 1875, but probably planted in the early 1800’s.

Circle around the trunk until you find the letterbox and follow the directions inside.
