September 8, 1900, began innocently in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas. Even Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau, failed to grasp the true meaning of the strange deep-sea swells and peculiar winds that greeted the city that morning. Mere hours later, Galveston found itself submerged by a monster hurricane that completely destroyed the town and killed over 6,000 people in what remains the greatest natural disaster in American history-and Isaac Cline found himself the victim of a devastating personal tragedy. Using Cline's own telegrams, letters, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the science of hurricanes, Erik Larson builds a chronicle of one man's heroic struggle and fatal miscalculation in the face of a storm of unimaginable magnitude. Thrilling, powerful, and unrelentingly suspenseful, Isaac's Storm is the story of what can happen when human arrogance meets the uncontrollable force of nature. A must read, "Isaac's Strom: a man, a time, and the deadliest hurricane in history by Erik Larson.

This box is located in the Upper Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. From shore birds to song birds, there is a lot to see here and even though this site is better known for migrating birds in the Spring

Directions to the Letterbox:
Corps Woods is in Galveston, which may be reached by traveling approximately 60 miles south from Houston via Interstate 45. In Galveston, right after crossing the big bridge, take the Harborside exit (1C) and turn left on Harborside (TX 275). After 6.2 miles it will dead-end into Ferry Road (TX 87). Turn left (north) and go .4 miles to TX 168 by a gas station on the right. Turn right and go .6 miles to a small parking area on the right by a brown sign saying Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. The US Coast Guard base is just down the road.

The box can be found: If you go through the gate, walk to "Beware Snakes" sign. Turn left, walk 60 steps to large bushy tree on the left of the trail. Facing the tree, walk off the trail 15 step, along the right of that tree. You will find a small tree with twisted trunks. The box is nestled at the base of these trunks.
