As noted by Will (The Headless Hunter) in the clues to “The Ghost Train” letterbox, the Indian Conservation Area is owned by the town of Dennis and is located in South Dennis. Park in the parking lot at the Dennis Town Hall on Old Bass River Road. This letterbox is located off the hiking trail which is part of the Indian Conservation land. The site is a gorgeous place to explore, or simply sit and appreciate the natural beauty of the land surrounding the Bass River.

Directions to The Dennis Town Hall and Parking Lot:

Take exit 9A off the mid cape highway, which will bring you onto Rte 134 headed south. Turn right at the first road, (marked Main St), which is before you reach the Shell gas station and the traffic light. As Will mentioned in his clues, it comes up very fast, so go slowly. (If you miss it as we did the first time, you can turn right at the traffic light [marked Market Place] and bear right, then left onto Olde Main St). Immediately bear right, and the road is now Olde Main Street. Pass Coach House Lane on the left, then Olde Dennis Approach and finally Westover Road on the right before coming to the stop sign at the end of Olde Main St. Turn left onto Old Bass River Road, and The Dennis Town Hall will be a couple of hundred feet on your right.

If you are coming from Yarmouth or Brewster along Rte 6A, turn down Old Bass River Road. You will be turning right if coming from Yarmouth, or left if coming from Brewster. The Dennis Congregational Church and the town gazebo on the green are at the intersection, with a Mobil gas station across the road. Drive about 4 miles up the road and on the right is the town hall.

To get to the Lady Slipper Letterbox, you will have to walk to the part of the Indian Conservation Land hiking trail that is known as the “Lady Slipper Loop”. Look for the Indian Conservation Land sign at the back of the parking lot, and enter the dirt road (trail). Walk down this wide access trail for a ways until you see the hiking trail on your left. Proceed down this trail, turning left at the first intersection. You will pass through a section of woods with marsh on either side. We could hear Chicadees chirping everywhere when we were there. Continue down this path to a bench where you can sit and watch all kinds of wading birds if the tide is out in the River. There is a bridge directly ahead of you at this point. We saw 3 Great Blue Herons here on the day we planted the box. When you come to a “Y”, take the right path, and walk along the marsh to a place where the creek empties into the Bass River. Along here we met a couple who arrived by canoe, and observed the coming and going of various motorboats on the river. Several benches are provided for your rest and enjoyment of the different vantage points of the scenery. When you reach the 2nd bench on the loop, turn and face the bench, and you will notice a fallen log on your left. Your prize lies under the north end of the largest piece of the log, near some young pine trees. After stamping in, continue around the loop, eventually returning to your first resting spot, and then your car. Enjoy!

Note: A new log book and markers were provided on 4/7/2007. The trail can be beautiful in the spring, so come on out and enjoy!
