If you heard the single surname “Pratt”, I doubt that it would have any meaning to you at all, unless you happened to know someone by that name. But when you hear the single name “Karloff”, I suspect that a frightful image of a certain monster fills your consciousness. Boris Karloff was born William Henry Pratt in Victorian England in 1887, and contrary to the image most of us have of him, was a truly gentle person. He never legally changed his name, but as Karloff, William Pratt left us a memorable legacy of screen horrors. After more than 70 unremarkable films, he was tapped to play the "monster" in "Frankenstein" in 1931, and made the character his imperishable own. In 1932 he was "The Mummy;" in 1935, he returned to his earlier role in "The Bride of Frankenstein," possibly a greater movie than the original. He went on to roles in innumerable films, plays and television programs; capped, perhaps, by his narration of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" in 1966. He was well loved not just by his fans, but by all of Hollywood, for his greatest character - his own. Still, if you were to meet up with him on a dark night in the woods of Telge…….

Directions: From US Hwy. 290, go north on Telge Rd. In about 3/4 mile you will cross Cypress Creek. Turn right on Pleasant Grove, then a quick right into the parking area.

To the Box: From the park restrooms, walk straight back to the wooden bridge. Cross over and go left on the trail. The trail will take you down a small decline and the path splits; keep left. Continue down the path until you come to a medium oak tree in the middle of the path. Turn right into the woods and walk 8 steps. To your right, another 8 steps away you will see a tall stump of a tree. Karloff is waiting at the back base of the tree under pieces of bark.
