In the fall of 1933, a group of hunters talked about creating a preserve to save some of the game and timber they thought were disappearing from the area. The Indiana Department of Conservation (now Dept. of Natural Resources) was contacted.

About 900 acres (my Grandpa donated 100 acres from his farm just to the north) and $1,300 was donated initially. By the spring of 1934, men from the Civilian conservation Corp (CCC) Camp were planting the 1st of nearly 300,000 tree seedlings.
Currant acreage is about 7,600 acres.

Drive (or walk) across the the Ferdinand State Forest dam noticing the peaceful 40 acre lake on your right and the old CCC-era building on the left.
After parking, walk to the camp site self-registration station. Feel free to open the doors and check out any info, like mountain bike trails, bird lists, etc.
Look slightly right and notice the 4 large trees all in a row. Walk near the center of the group and see the large V on the ground, a few paces in front of you.
In the point of the V, you will find what you are looking for.

The fisherman's bench, if unoccupied, is a good place to relax and open the letterbox.

Afterwards, take time to explore the rest of this quiet park, especially the road up to the campground under the large pines and the old CCC shelterhouse a bit further.
Our dogs love being walked here!
