The "Benjamin Franklin Terry" letterbox is hidden in Glenwood Cemetery, one of the most historic in Houston, and the final resting place of Benjamin Franklin Terry. Terry was a wealthy man in the Fort Bend area before the start of the Civil War, and was highly regarded by the citizens. When war broke out, Terry, along with THomas Lubbock and John Wharton hatched a plan to organize a company of rangers for the Confederacy. He served as an aide to General Longstreet in the First Battle of Bull Run, and then along with Lubbock was given the authority by Jefferson Davis to organize the Eighth Texas Cavalry. He returned to Texas and recruited over a thousand men, then marched toward Virginia in November of 1861. They were already being called "Terry's Texas Rangers". On the way Colonel Lubbock became ill and was left behind in Tennessee. Terry pushed on and his company saw its first action outside Woodsonville, Kentucky, where Colonel Terry was killed in action. Though he was gone, Terry's Texas Rangers went on to distinguish themselves throughout the Civil War, fighting in 275 battles in 7 states, and being the only cavalry unit to defeat an infantry unit which they did twice. Terry's body was sent by train to Texas, but on the way lied in state in state in Nathville, New Orleans and Houston.
