Wow! Another day of exploring the MetroParks. I wanted to go alone, but Grandma told me I had to take Willie with me today. We came down Rockcliff Lane today and went to the right over the bridge to get into the park. We decided to park our bikes by the bathrooms, so we locked them together and headed down the path directly in front the bathrooms, on the other side of the paved path and crossed over the secondary dirt path.

As we were walking along aways, we came to a big mound of dirt in the middle of the path. Boy....sure wish I would have brought my bike because it would have been a great hill to cross. We walked about 13 paces past the tree and came upon a tree lying across the path. I walked to the end of the tree to the left, and heard a whirling sound and saw a flutter of leaves and twigs. Carefully I reached into the hollowed out end of the tree only to realize the source of the agitation. Another treasure to add to my growing collection in Grandma’s closet!!

We continued on our journey down the path, and again came across a great spot for our bikes. It was a bunch of logs embedded in the dirt, sort of like a ramp. I walked another 13 paces and came to a small split in the path when I saw a shiny long object. I went a step or two down the path on the right and saw a rotting log. I went to the left end of the tree and lifted a piece of the bark and found my shiny object. Wow! I’ve never played this sport before! Now maybe I can try!

Willie started his usual whining about the bugs, so we made our way back up to the main paved trail. We walked along past the wooden fence and saw another path leading to the right. It looked very steep, so we walked a few more paces and found a few more paths that weren’t so steep. Once we got down the dirt path, we continued left for a short distance, and then came to a dip in the middle of the path. Just to annoy me, Willie started counting every other step he took until he reached 120.

Just then, we arrived at a circular type intersection, with trees growing in the middle of all the paths. I stood looking at this mass of trees, when to my left, up a slight hill at about 100 degrees, was a huge tree with the base totally rotting out. I walked towards it, and had to jump over a small ravine. As I got closer, I could hear the thumpa…thumpa…thumpa… I looked around the big hollow area by the roots and found the reason for the noise. I put it carefully in my backpack, hoping to preserve it until I got home.

Willie was already running back to the main paved trail, and was well ahead of me. I followed him through a large clearing, and caught up to him at the far end of a metal guardrail. He quickly ran to the right down a path, and I followed. We started pretending that we were in a jungle, and hiking through the thicket of underbrush. We came to a clearing, and stood facing a tree that was growing at an angle (left to right) across the path. It must have been struck by high winds, as it was split and had fallen over another tree on the right of the path. It was here that a saw a puddle of water, and a chunk of.....what was it? Ice??? I reached up into the split of the tree, and pulled my hand away quickly...it was so cold!!! This time I grabbed it again, and put it in my backpack next to my other great finds.

We continued along this path until we came to a large clearing with picnic tables, and benches overlooking the water. At the last bench, we saw that the path continued into the woods. Willie started chasing a wild rabbit down the path. He ran until he was out of breath and stopped to rest at the HUGE double trunked tree. After catching his breath, he took off running again and got about 106 paces ahead of me, but had enough sense to wait for me there. To the right was another small path that we followed for a few paces and came upon something in the splitting tree sparkling brilliantly. I reached up into the split area and pulled out the sparkling prism-shaped object. I found a used tissue in my backpack, and wrapped my prize and stuffed it into the secret pocket of my backpack.

Willie snuck up behind me and said, “Whatcha got?” I replied, “None of your beeswax!” and gave him a shove. He started crying, and then I felt so bad about pushing him. “Look, Willie, I didn’t mean to shove you. Let me make it up to you, let’s get back to Grandma’s and I’ll take you for ice cream. Deal?” It didn’t take long for Willie to nod in agreement through his tears.

When we got to Grandma’s, I shoved my backpack in Grandma’s Closet for safe keeping. I’d look at my treasure again when Willie wasn’t around.
