This box was inspired by the Sunshine Kids' placement of the Red Cross letterbox. While looking for it, I found a nice location for this box.

The American Red Cross located in the former American Electric Power building on May Street in Athens. To find this headquarters, take either May Avenue OR Morris Avenue to the end. Where these two streets intersect is the rear entrance to the Red Cross parking lot. (This is the starting point for both this box, and for Sunshine Kids' "Red Cross" letterbox.)

To find this box, read the sign that says "Authorized Parking Only". For the few moments you may be here, you may park in their lot.

Stand behind this sign, and face East, toward the bike path and Athens Recreation Center on the horizon. A small, single lane driveway, separates from the Red Cross Parking Lot and travels a short way to the east. Walk to the end of this short driveway. Your progress will be stopped by a cable and barriers when you are standing upon a concrete parking pad.
Note: You will pass the silver grey sheet metal garage to get here. Turn left to observe the broad back side of this garage. It has been the canvas for several spray graphitti artists. Although most of these figures and symbols are un- related, the largest one is clearly the angry robot. Look at him wave his arms! He is angry someone has stollen his letterbox!

What you seek was once located at his feet. Look either side of the concrete support that is directly at the base of his feet for a single camo-wrapped jar. After two attempts to replace this, I am convinced a lawn mower is removing the jars without comment. Therefore, follow these additional directions as of June 26, 2011:

At the end of this concrete parking pad is a cable barrier strung from wooden post to wooden post. Starting the the one closest to the grey sheet metal garage, follow the cable from post to post until you reach the third post.
*******PS: A large maple tree has blown over and collapsed upon the wire cable, so it may be a challenge to follow the cable deep into the obscuring branches. Maybe it will be cleared before you arrived.******

This one has had some termites or rot start to hollow out the top, leaving a small depression just big enough for a store-bought rubber stamp to be hidden in it. Not enough room for a full letterbox jar, but it will have to do. Sorry, no room for a log book right now...but wait about 20 years, and we'll see... and so...

Please bring your own stamp pad, logbook, towel to wipe off the letterbox and to sit upon. You can probably sit right here, somewhat un-observed to do your log work. Enjoy!
(In the event the letterbox is missing, vandlized, full or needs attention, please alert me. Also, if your stamp pad is running dry, there MAY be a red stamp pad inside the Red Cross letterbox nearby...but that is a separate box. Enjoy!)

ALTERNATIVE WALKING DIRECTIONS: The Athens-Hock-Hocking Bikepath runs some 19 miles or so, between Nelsonville and a bit east of Athens. When the bike path passes under Stimson Avenue, a spur runs off and up to the street level of Stimson Avenue. From here, CAREFULLY cross this busy road, and you will enter a gravel parking area that is used usually by soccer mom's but sometimes by foreign students from the Mill Street Apartments behind you.
Walk the length of this gravel parking lot, and it becomes a single lane dirt path along the border of the soccer field area. It approachs the intersection of May Avenue and Morris Avenue(someday this may become an extension of May Avenue), but continues as a single lane further until it reaches the Athens County Library off Home Street. Your starting point for this box is a Morris and May Avenues, of course.

******THIS BOX HAS VANISHED TWICE NOW. LOCAL MOWER MAY BE REMOVING IT.*******SORRY.****
