The Ronald McDonald House at Stanford creates a home-away-from-home and supportive community for families of children with life-threatening illnesses receiving specialized treatment at local hospitals. Because we live in the community and I have donated freshly cooked meal to families staying here, I felt it appropriate to plant a box to build awareness and love for children and families with severe illnesses.

I really wanted to make this a clever clue, but being as my own child is currently ill and I’ve had my other two children at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, I can’t think of clever, only of clearly supportive language. So I thought of Love-A-Lot Carebear (yes, I’m a child of the 80’s). Love-a-lot Bear’s mission is to spread love and help it along wherever she goes.

There are numerous ways in which to get involved at the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. One may volunteer for to work in the office, to garden, or even to drop off freshly made meals. If you are unable to come to the House you can donate or participate in one of their fundraisers. You can learn more at http://www.ronaldhouse.net/getinvolved/getinvolved.html

On with the clue (that has a few yummy treat for the first finders)!

Find the Visitor and Registration parking lot at the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford (you may choose to park in the Stanford Mall parking near at Sand Hill/London Plane Way or Plum Lane). Along Sand Hill road follow the trail to the Ronald McDonald “Safe Zone”. Find the rock that says “Meditation Garden”. Sit on the rock and meditate facing the parking lot, so the sign is about between your legs. Reach down on the right and you will Care-A-Lot about your find. As you stamp in on the benches, send positive thoughts towards the families and children staying here. They come from every part of the country (and world) and have long waits while their children are treated.
I hope this box leaves you feeling empowered that we as a community can help our children, even when we don’t know about the struggles they face. If you’re a comfort eater like me, you may just walk across the street to Sprinkles and enjoy one of the best cupcakes you’ll eat in your life (or at least the most tasteful AND expensive).
