*** Part of Old West Forts Series ****

Fort Crophan was established on March 18,1849 as part of the frontier defense line of forts by Brevet 2nd Lieutenant Charles H. Tyler of the 2nd U.S. Dragoons. It was named for Colonel George Crophan, then inspector general of the U.S. Army who died on 1-8-1849. The fort was located on the right bank of Hamilton Creek , about 14 miles above its mouth. Originally it was called Post on Hamilton creek, but 1850 it was designated Fort Crophan. It was abandoned in December of 1853. Today a historical marker marks the spot of the original fort, as well as a museum and displays out back. (it's Croghan, not Crophan you Bozo -- Ghost of IRA Boxer)

Directions:
From Burnet, go west on Hwy 29 to fort museum on the left. Pull in and park out front near historical marker.

To the Letterbox:
**** they were closed when I place, so had to put out front. If someone finds, and you are willing, and if they are open, please move to new location out back and email me the new clues to post ***** For now, it is under right side of the porch. So from marker, go to left side of porch, go to side and find box next to the stone outer wall (Green box, about 2"x3".
