The mid-1950's were a period described by many as the Golden Age of Automobiling. By that time, Route 40 served America well, carrying more automobile traffic than any other transcontinental highway. Back then, if you needed to go from coast to coast, there simply wasn't a better choice.

During its heyday, the highway ran 3,157 miles from Atlantic City to San Francisco, traversing the midsection of the United States. When the Interstate Highway system came along, many western sections of Route 40 were decommissioned. Today, Route 40 through Maryland is no longer the Major Route of its heyday but a mere back road in History.

Locating this Rest Area will take you along Scenic Route 40 in Western Maryland

Take Exit 68 from I 68, follow Orleans Road North till you Intersect with Route 40. Make a Left and go in a WEST Direction. About 3 miles west you will locate a Road on your LEFT ( Old Adams Road ) PArk at the STOP Sign along this Road.
Walk WEST 300 feet along Route 40, You will discover a REST STOP that once provided travelers with an area to relax, Now it is being taken back by Nature.

Locating the Centerpiece of this Rest Area will provide you with a Large Sized Plastic JAR, painted to match its surroundings and hidden away.

Enjoy the area and don't get burned tending to the Grill
