Letterbox Name: The Great American Pin-up Series: Vixen, Merry and Holly
Location: McHenry, IL
Distance: 3.7 miles

Well, it was probably inevitable. As we’re in the thick of the holiday season, Lock, Shock and Barrel are proud to unveil a permanent series of three holiday pin-ups, all to be found at Moraine Hills State Park, just around the bend from Holiday Hills, IL.

NOTE REGARDING THE PARK: When I drove into the park, there was a sign indicating that it would be closed during deer hunting season (rifle). You may want to check the Illinois DNR website before venturing out.

NOTES REGARDING THE STAMPS: Please use only red ink on Vixen and Holly. Merry needs only green ink. And if you like the art on the stamps, you may want to check out the original prints, by artist Lauren Moore. Her site is called http://www.etsy.com/shop/HellcatHoneys, and she’s got some lovely artwork.

Merry

Park in the Oak Opening parking lot, and proceed to the red trail. Head left (south) on the trail. After a short walk on the asphalt path, you’ll see two covered benches in the distance. Around this point, the asphalt path will change to a gravel surface.

From the point where the asphalt changes to gravel, take a 20-degree bearing. You’ll be looking right at an old oak tree that’s taken some damage, but hasn’t yet given up hope.

The southern half of the tree has fallen away, but in its place, at the base of the tree, you’ll find Merry.

The tree is rather close to the trail, so please be discreet as you find and re-hide the box. You can stamp in at the covered benches, which are within sight of the tree.

Vixen

Continue along the red trail, going first downhill, and then past the junctions for the Hickory Ridge, Pine Hills, Kettle Woods, and Pike Marsh parking areas. As you pass the Pike Marsh junction, the trail will quickly take a turn to the right, through a gate.

You’ll be walking along the road, past wetlands on your right. Soon, you’ll pass the sign for mile marker 1.5.

Passing through another gate, the trail will start to rise gently, turning to the right and then to the left. On the right side of the trail, you’ll spy a small path branching off along a ridge.

Follow that path into the woods, continuing as it descends into a hollow.

On your right, you’ll soon spot a long, fallen log running parallel to the trail. You’ll know you’ve got the right one, because the stump at the base of the log is scorched.

It’s in that scorched end of the log that you’ll find Vixen hiding. Given your distance from the main trail, you should have no problem stamping in right there.

Holly

First, let me say that I LOVE this stamp. It’s one of my personal favorites and, if you can only find one of these holiday hotties, I highly recommend Holly.

To find her, make your way back to the red trail. At Junction C, turn right (north), and turn right again at Junction B. At this point, you’ll be headed toward the woods.

Just past mile marker 2.25, you’ll see a deer path on the left side of the trail, rising up a ridge and into the woods. Follow that trail. When you reach the crest of the hill, you’ll be looking down into another small hollow.

Immediately in front of you, you’ll see a tall split oak tree. Holly is resting in the space between the trunks, nestled against the trunk on the southwest side of the tree.

Once you've re-hidden Holly, rejoin the red trail, and make your way back around Defiance Lake to the Oak Opening parking area.

The Great American Pin-up series is, first and foremost, a celebration of the style, femininity, and fun of pin-up art over the years. We hope that you enjoy the images as much as we’ve enjoyed selecting and carving them.
