Cascara is a plant I’ve often seen in the redwood forests and until recently wondered what it was. Besides Cascara it’s also called Cascara Buckthorn and Bearberry. Its scientific name is Rhamnus purshiana. To read about it check Wikpedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhamnus_purshiana

Every once in a while I have been tempted to try the berries and now I’m glad I did not succumb to the temptation!

To find the Cascara Letterbox head over to the Avenue of the Giants north of Garberville and off Highway 101. Just north of Phillipsville turn east into the parking lot for the Franklin K. Lane Grove.

Franklin Knight Lane (July 15, 1864 – May 18, 1921) was an American Democratic politician from California who served as United States Secretary of the Interior from 1913 to 1920. He also served as a commissioner of the Interstate Commerce Commission, and was the Democratic nominee for Governor of California in 1902, losing a narrow race in what was then a heavily Republican state.

At the northeast edge of the lot find the trailhead for the half mile loop. Take the loop which can occasionally be slightly difficult to discern. But persevere and you'll find it. When you reach the Y go right. The box is about 2/3 of the way around. You’ll see two cement posts on your walk around the loop. They mark the old Redwood Highway which originally bisected the grove. In the late 30’s the road was rerouted to its present location. These vestiges, the posts, and perhaps other indicators yet remain. Anyhow, also along the way next to the trail and on your left you’ll note a large upended redwood with its large root system in the air. Later you’ll see another upended redwood root, this time on the right and reminiscent of a peace sign. Stay on the trail and walk between the root on the right and the medium sized erect tree on your left. Turn to your right and look maybe three or four feet from the trail to an area butting up and under the root. Behind a large rock and some obscuring leaf litter should be your Cascara Letterbox.

Please replace the litter and rock and take care that the box is well hidden and securely closed with plastic baggies completely inside box.

And thanks for coming!!
