“A Wish for a New Year”

1. Read the disclaimer and liability waiver from the web site. This is always at your own risk.
2. Go to the parking lot for Connecticut River Highlands State Park in Cromwell, CT. (Just South of Rock Hill)
3. A trail map is available at the big board/sign.
4. Go the trailhead behind the “Motor Vehicles Prohibited” sign, and start off down the trail.
5. Take first right off the main trail, while still within view of the parking lot.
6. Follow this winding trail, you’ll see a house off on your right at first. You will be working your way mostly West-ish. (There used to be a rusty bike on one of the trees for those familiar with the park, but it is gone now ???)
7. You’ll see a tree on the left hand side of the trail with a large hole that would be perfect for a letterbox if it weren’t so obvious. Keep following the trail.
8. There is a slight fork in the trail, stay to the left.
9. When you come to an intersection shortly after the slight fork, continue straight in a westward direction.
10. If you look up in the trees on the right hand side of this trail, you will see a tree with a growth the size of a basketball overhead. Keep going.
11. You’re looking for a tree off to the right with a growth/tumor the size of a LARGE beachball.
12. Walk up to this tree. It kind of looks like it is holding a giant globe to us. BE CAREFULL for leaning deadwood, trips, etc… and try not to step on any “princesses”.
13. Position yourself staring at the cleft in the growth.
14. Pretend the cleft in the growth is 12 o’clock.
15. Look towards 10 o’clock and you’ll see two sister trees (one alive, one not).
16. Look at the back of the base for our wish for the world for this and every new year!
17. Please repack and hide everything carefully and neatly. Enjoy the rest of the park, or return the way you came. It is a great place with some lovely landscapes, but be careful not to get too turned around, especially if you don’t have a map.
18. Use the web site to contact us if maintenance is needed, or you enjoyed this letterbox.

Thanks
