Yes, Virginia, there is a 100 Acre Wood, and it is in the Town of Malta, NY. It cries out for a Winnie-The-Pooh series of letterboxes, and who better to plant it than Rabbit's Friends and Relations? Mrs. Rabbit created these stamps, and they are her favorites, parted with under duress for the glory of the game. All the stamps are in baggies covered in camouflage tape, except for the last which is in a box (big enough for hitchhikers) with the logbook. Please hide the stamps back where you found them, and please give us updates on their condition. We planted these in winter, with snow on the ground, and tried our best to avoid brambles and poison ivy. If any stamp should need relocating, please drop us a line and we'll fix it.

To begin your Expotition in the Woods, take exit 12 off I-87 north of Albany, and head east to Rt. 9 south. One half mile south on Rt. 9, on the left, is Stonebreak Road, and a large sign advertising the 100 Acre Wood (part of the Luther Forest Technology campus). Drive 0.8 miles, then turn right on 100 Acre Woods Way. Turn left onto Luther Forest Blvd., then drive to the traffic circle, do a u-turn back onto Luther Forest Blvd., and the parking area will be just ahead on the right. If you are on the hunt for these boxes in the winter and 100 Acre Woods Way is closed, see the alternate set of directions at the end of these clues. The story is shamelessly lifted from "The House At Pooh Corner", chapter 5.
Download a map of the Wood and its walking trails before you head out: http://www.malta-town.org/Documents/PDF/ParksRec/LFTCtrailSystemMap.pdf

Since it is just the kind of day for doing things, like letterboxing, you'll first want to go find Rabbit. He's the fellow that gets things done around here. Go down the Red trail and turn right at the first intersection. Look down the trail to the stump on the right (about 40 paces from the intersection). Standing on the stump, sight 25* to another stump, behind which you will find Rabbit.

Rabbit has found a curious note from Christopher Robin:
GON OUT
BACKSON
BISY
BACKSON
C.R.

We need Owl next to help us figure this out, because he has brains instead of fluff. Continue to the intersection of the Red and Green trails where you will find a bench. Standing at the right end of the bench, sight 350* to the stump about 22 steps into the woods. Behind it, under some bark, you will find Owl.

Owl says that Christopher Robin has obviously gone off with a Spotted or Herbaceous Backson. Find that and it is most definite that you'll find Christopher Robin. To help, you'll need to gather the rest of the inhabitants of the 100 Acre Woods, so go down the hill on the Green trail. At the next bench, the Green trail goes to the left and continues to yet another bench. Stop at this bench, just above the bridge, and sight 105* to a stump at the edge of a ridge. Walk about 32 steps to this stump and find Pooh and Piglet building a Heffalump trap on the uphill side of the stump.

With the four friends, continue along the Green trail down to the bridge, stopping for a short game of Pooh Sticks, of course. Climb the stairs and turn right onto the Yellow trail. When the Yellow intersects the Blue, turn right, then right again at the next Y. Continue until you come to a bench. Standing at the right side of the bench, sight 160* to a V tree, 20 steps in. Behind the V tree and attached to it is a stump, on top of which are hidden Kanga and Roo.

Continue along the Blue trail, past the parking lot and back into the woods. Keep right at the Y (still Blue) and continue down the hill to the intersection of the Purple trail. Turn right onto the Purple trail and go over the bridge to the stone bench. At the left end of the bench, sight 260* and walk 30 steps to a step-shaped stump. Tigger is hiding on top of the lower step of the stump. By now you should know well what it means to go "Stumping through the 100 Acre Woods"!

Go back over the bridge and continue to the right on the Blue trail. At the intersection of the Yellow trail, turn right and follow the Yellow trail (no bricks in sight) until the intersection of the Green trail. With your back to the post marking the Green trail, count 22 steps back along the Yellow trail. Turn 90* to the right and find a Spotted and Herbaceous 20-foot Stump. Eeyore is at the foot of this giant stump, beneath some sticks of course. (Or maybe he isn't; it's all the same, unless it's different, in which case it doesn't really matter anyway, but thanks for thinking of him.)

With the help of three sticks, Eeyore kindly solves the mystery of where Christopher Robin goes in the mornings and offers to go with you to see him. Turn right onto the Green trail, back down the stairs and across the Pooh Sticks bridge, and wave to Pooh and Piglet as you pass. Turn right at the intersection (still Green) but then keep right and go onto the old logging road. Follow the road up to the next intersection, which is the Red trail. Sit on the bench that you can see on the right, and sight 40* to see a stump next to a slender pine. To get there, walk 32 steps along the Red trail, turn left and go 14 steps into the woods. Christopher Robin and the logbook for the series are in a box in the top of the hollow stump.

To return to your car, walk from the stump back to the trail, turn left, then right, then left again on the Red trail.

"Next morning, the notice on Christopher Robin's door said:
GONE OUT
BACK SOON
C.R.
Which is why all the animals in the Forest - except, of course, the Spotted and Herbaceous Backson - now know what Christopher Robin does in the mornings."

Directions from the North parking lot:
From the parking lot, go left onto the Blue trail until you reach the stone bench on your left. Standing at the right side of the bench, sight 160* to a small stump, 20 steps in, behind which is a V tree. Behind the V tree and attached to it is another stump on top of which is hidden Kanga and Roo.

Continue down the Blue trail and turn right at the next intersection. Turn left at the next intersection (away from the parking lot), and continue to the intersection of the purple trail. Turn right onto the Purple trail and go over the bridge to the stone bench. At the left end of the bench, sight 260* and walk 30 steps to a step-shaped stump. Tigger is hiding on top of the lower step of the stump.

Go back over the bridge and continue to the right on the Blue trail. At the intersection of the Yellow trail, turn right and follow the Yellow trail until the intersection of the Green trail. With your back to the post marking the Green trail, count 22 steps back along the Yellow trail. Turn 90* to the right and find a Spotted and Herbaceous 20-foot Stump. Eeyore is at the foot of this giant stump, beneath some sticks of course.

Turn right onto the Green trail and go down the stairs, over the bridge, and up the stairs to a stone bench on the left. Stop at this bench and sight 105* to a stump at the edge of a ridge. Walk about 32 steps to this stump and find Pooh and Piglet building a Heffalump trap on the uphill side of the stump.

Go back to the trail and continue to an intersection. Turn right and keep left on the Green trail, going up a hill where you will find another intersection. Turn left onto the Red trail and go to the bench that is there. Standing at the right end of the bench, sight 350* to the stump about 22 steps into the woods. Behind it, under some bark, you will find Owl.

Continue along the red trail until it makes a sharp bend to the right. There will be a stump on your left. Standing on the stump, sight 25* to another stump, behind which you will find Rabbit. If you come to a T-intersection, you have gone too far. Go back about 40 paces to the stump which will now be on your right.

Go back to the T-intersection and turn right. Follow the Red trail right around to a bench. Sit on the right end of the bench and sight 40* to see a stump next to a slender pine. To get there, walk 32 steps along the Red trail, turn left and go 14 steps into the woods. Christopher Robin and the logbook for the series are in a box in the top of the hollow stump.

To go back to your car, go down the logging road to the left of the last stump, turn left at the intersection (Green trail), and begin retracing your steps. Turn right at the Yellow trail, then right at the Blue trail and stay straight on this to the parking lot.
