Pink was getting impatient with me, why had she trusted me the map and compass anyway. I can't find my way out of a wet paper bag. The day had started out OK on the trail by the Skul River River but now we were lost.It was all my fault.
I was standing on a trail not on any map trying to find my way back to the parking lot of Lock 60.
I retraced the steps in my mind... We started from the parking lot, took the trail along the canal and then the river. We saw a huge concrete column(5 or 6 feet high), a strange turquoise color. From this point we went off trail to the right. We struggled awhile going over a small stream until we found the trail, with the stream on our left. We went up hill with the trail rising sharply and the stream below us on our left.
We crossed two gullies and then crossed the stream 2 times. We walked a bit up the trail from the second stream crossing and I saw A log that appeared to have fallen across the stream and houses up on the ridge to my left. I could the faint tinkle of someone playing the piano.
It felt wrong we had gone too far. I decided it would be best if we turned around. We went back to the first stream crossing. I stood on the rock in the middle of the stream and I pulled out my compass. I took a reading of 30 degrees and proceeded up the hill. I stopped to catch my breath by a tree with an obvious looking SPOR. Lo and behold here was the trail head.
Heads up to Hairy Leggers, walk the whole thing.
