Last month we were in Florida when Oldhounder celebrated his 75th birthday (that's not in dog years). I carved a stamp and put together a box and we set out looking for a place to plant it. We were about an hour from Oldhounder and Siamese's winter kennel, but not knowing the area, we returned disappointed with the lack of obvious planting locations. So I brought it back to New England to plant later.
Find the end of Robbins Street in Acton, MA. Here is a map for Heath Hen Conservation Area: http://www.actontrails.org/MapHeathHenMeadow.htm
Walk past the kiosk and enter the woods on the yellow trail as it bears left. At the intersection, turn right onto the blue trail, passing the vernal pool on the left, and turn right again at the next blue intersection. Follow this trail to a low esker in the pines. Just before the trail enters the oaken swamp, stop at the last blazed large pine tree. From the blue-blazed pine, continue 10 steps WNW along the trail. Stop and turn to the SW taking about 14 steps to a rocky outcrop. Sniff under the end of one of the rocks for the birthday box! Don't forget to wish Oldhounder a (belated) 75th!
Return the way you came. OR in the winter, if you are lucky enough to come out during a long cold spell, you can traverse the frozen swamp to a small island to explore.
