Cormier Woods Barn letterbox
UPDATED 11/09/14: box has been replaced with directions revised.

Cormier Woods is a 175 acre Trustees reservation that currently has ~3 miles of easy-moderate hiking trails through it. You’ll discover the remains of an earlier homestead along the hike as well as massive boulders sprinkled throughout the reservation. At the beginning of the hike you’ll see the backside of the private residence farmhouse and barn. Take a close look at the barn as you’ll see this again if you find what you seek. Find more information about Cormier Woods at http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/central-ma/cormier-woods.html

Great hike for kids (though not stroller accessible) and dogs. There are several other letterboxes in this park you might want to check out as well.

Directions from I-495:

Take exit 19 onto Route 109 West and follow for 1 mile. Turn left onto Route 16 and follow for 7.4 miles. Take a slight left onto Blackstone Street and follow for 0.6 mile. Turn left onto Chapin Street and follow 0.7 mile to 217 Chapin Street.

From Route 146:
Take exit 3 onto Route 16N towards Uxbridge. Turn right onto rt 122 and then a quick left at the light back onto rt 16. Follow Rt 16 out of town. Just past the Polish Hall on your right veer right past the playground and follow this road to the end. Turn right onto Blackstone Street and then turn left onto Chapin Street and follow ~.7 mile to 217 Chapin Street. Park on the left.

Clues:
Grab a map from the information sign in the parking lot or download from the website before leaving home. Cross the street to the trailhead and follow it to where you can turn left or right. Turn left - your destination is the Jonathon White Homestead Area located on the Blue Loop Trail. Take a look at the backside of the old farmhouse and barn and you walk by.

While following the Red Loop trail be sure to keep a look out for the red markers. Don’t turn down any unmarked trails)through the Boulder Field. Continue on this trail until you come to the Blue Loop Trail that has a "you are here" trail sign and turn left down the trail. Follow the trail staying left towards "Jonathon's shortcut" (at this point if you look up there may still be a bucket hanging in the tree). When you come to a "T" in the trail and there's an old foundation in front of you -this is part of the Jonathon White Homestead area (the 3 circles located in the white box on the map), turn right at this intersection and walk to the left hand sharp bend in the trail (at the 3rd circle on the map).

At this sharp bend on your left, you will see a large rock surrounded by 3 (or 4 depending on how you want to count them!) large pine trees. Starting at the base of the rock facing the trail and the (second) old foundation in front of you, take ~10-14 steps to two old granite steps (during the summer months the foundation and granite steps may be hidden by weeds and other green growth -careful of poison ivy -but they are there slighlty down the hill). Go down these steps, down the slope and into the opening of the foundation. If there's poison ivy, you might be able to get down to the foundation by going around to the left and avoiding the steps. Once in the foundation walk to the back "room" and turn right. What you seek is hidden in this old wall under the overhang. Please re-hide well so that no one will be able to spot it from the trail.
When finished stamping, return to the parking lot by the way you came or by finishing the loop. You can also search for the other letterboxes located in Cormier Woods of which one from "The Old Farmstead" is also in this foundation.
