Letterboxing is a fun way to explore the Alder collection at the Arboretum. Most of our Alders are found adjacent to The Meadow.
To find the letterbox, follow these directions:
1. Start at Willow Path opposite the Visitor Center.
2. After crossing the bridge over the brook, go 48 steps, turn right and go 22 steps to the Manchurian alder (A. hirsuta) 71-92-A. Check out the catkins on the broken branch.
3. Go back to the path and continue another 60 steps. Look right toward the common alder (A. glutinosa) set back a few steps from the path.
4. Continue another 125 steps to the speckled alder (A. incana spp. rugosa) 125-2005-A and B. These shrubs were wild collected in Massachusetts.
5. Go another 40 steps to the hazel alder (A. serrulata) 389-2002-A.
6. Finally, take another 43 steps to the Maximowicz alder (A. maximowiczii) 142-77-A.
7. Circle around to the right to the back side of this large shrub. You will find the letterbox where the trunks meet the ground (it might be under some snow).
