This box will only be out during Black History month 2011. I will continue to plant a Black History each February. The boxes in the future will include the stamps from previous years boxes. I hope you enjoy finding this box and learn a little about America's history.

Who was Major Taylor?
Marshall Walter Taylor was born November 26, 1878 to Gilbert Taylor, Civil War veteran and Saphronia Kelter. Marshall was hired by a local Chicago bike shop to perform tricks at the age of 12. He wore a military uniform, this is where he got his nickname "Major" Taylor. He was given a free bike and paid $6 a week. Taylor was just 13 years old when he started racing. By 18 Major had turned pro. He won the the World One Mile Track Championship in 1899. Major is mostly known for his velodrome racing. He is noted as one of the best track racers of all time. For more information visit the Major Taylor Association.

The Clues
From the gate at Hanson Field walk south (up the hill). As you walk begin counting the large evergreens on the left, those closest to the path. Stop at the third tree. Go around to the far side of the tree and check the base. (Light post 561 will be on your right) Muggle Alert If it is a high traffic time you can take the box back to your car. After stamping in please bring it back promptly!

Parking at WIU
If you never plan on registering you vehicle at WIU you can park anywhere. I might receive a ticket, however you do not have to pay for it unless you plan on registering you car for parking at WIU in the future. I can understand if you have hesitation about that. There are meters in almost all parking lots on campus (25 cents per hour, one hour at a time). You can park on Holden Terrace for completely legal and free parking. It will require more walking, but you can rest assured your car will not get ticketed while letterboxing.
